We show our support for the elderly

3 de April de 2020

Working with the Santoña Town Council, we set up a campaign to help elderly people living alone during the COVID-19 crisis.

The elderly are one of the most vulnerable groups to infection from this virus. Consequently, Grupo Consorcio set up this initiative under the slogan “Con Nuestros Mayores” (Supporting our Elderly) so that Santoña’s older generations knew that we were going to look out for them. “Loneliness and fear are extremely common among our elderly these days. The Santoña Town Council Social Work department informed us that when caring for these people, they noticed their need to talk with the social workers and so we came up with the idea. A lot of people want to help and don’t know how, and there are many elderly adults who need someone to look out for them,” stated our Vice-President Valeria Piaggio.

The programme is open to citizen collaboration, particularly for people who are willing to give up some of their free time to visit, talk and actively listen to people who need company at this time. You can take part in this campaign by sending an email to grupoconsorcio@grupoconsorcio.com and we’ll match up elderly people and volunteers who wish to take part.

Donation of PPE and free distribution of food for people aged over 65 years old.

This #connuestromayores movement is not just about overcoming loneliness but includes other actions such as donating protective equipment (PPE) for the Santoña Town Council Home Help service and weekly free distribution of food to the homes of people aged over 65.

Since the state of alarm began, at Grupo Consorcio we wanted to play our part in this health emergency to improve the well-being of the elderly in our local surrounding area. To date, we have already donated more than 90,000 PPE units including disposable gloves, overalls, aprons and hair nets, as well as a substantial quantity of food valued at 6,000 Euros every week. “If COVID-19 had affected children and young people in the same way, our fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers would have done everything possible to take care of us. This was how the #connuestrosmayores (with our elderly) plan emerged to work with our Town Council in this pandemic helping with their social care programmes, food supplies and to fight loneliness and isolation among elderly people in Santoña”.

This free food distribution service for elderly people living alone has been running since 31st March and it can be requested by calling the following phone number: 942 66 04 02. The Town Council social workers oversee collecting food from Consorcio headquarters every Tuesday at 10am and handing it out.
